Group Assignment: Computer Controlled Machining

In this assignment we worked with the Rensi Exitech CNC milling machine. We went through
the safety training and learned how to use the machine. We cut some test pieces to see what
kind of results we can get with different settings.

Safety

The CNC milling machine is a powerful tool that can cause serious injuries if not used properly.
The safety measures we used included wearing safety glasses and ear protection, keeping a
safe distance from the machine while it is operating, and monitoring the machine closely during
the whole process.

Preparation

Power on from the main switch and the control panel

Clean up the work area with a vacuum cleaner.

Change the tool and clean it with a brush.

We used a 8mm flat end mill for our test pieces.
alt text

Calibrate the Z coordinate by lowering the tool until it touches the remote calibrator and
then setting the Z coordinate to the corresponding height.

Place the workpiece on the machine bed and secure it by opening vacuum valves.

Now the machine is ready for operation.

Results

We used pocket milling for the square inside the square and contour milling to cut the outer
shape. In contour milling, we used tabs to keep the piece in place while cutting.

The dimensions we set were as follows:

  • Inner square: 120mm
  • Depth of square: 5mm
  • Gap between inner and outer circle: 8mm
  • Distance between square and cirlce: 20mm

You can see the results of our test pieces with cut dimensions below.
